OVPRPIA hosts Research Competency Enhancement Seminar on the Publication Process for GS students

The Office of the Vice
President for Research, Publications,
and International Affairs (OVPRPIA) in
collaboration with the Office of the Vice
President for Graduate Studies (OVPGS)
provided a Research Competency
Enhancement Seminar to the graduate
students with the theme “On the Publication
Process: Knowledge Production in the
Academic Landscape,” on May 27, 2023
at the Kalinangan Auditorium, LCUP Main
Campus.
The seminar featured a talk on
Research and Publication: Towards a
Culture of Research, tackled by the Guest
Speaker, Dr. Roland Theuas Pada,
Associate Professor at the Department of
Philosophy, Faculty of Arts and Letters
as well as a Researcher at the Research
Center for Culture, Arts, and Humanities
- University of Santo Tomas – Manila. In
Dr. Pada’s discussion, certain points were
highlighted such as the personal motives
for research, practices in nurturing a
culture of research in an institution, and
things to consider before submitting a
paper to a journal. He also shared the
screening process in Kritike – an open-
access journal of the UST Department of
Philosophy where he is currently affiliated
with as one of the editors.
An open forum
was facilitated after Dr. Pada’s talk to
give way to questions from the audience
especially from students who are yet to
experience publishing a paper.
Part of the activity is the discussion
of the Culture of Research in the LCUP
Graduate Studies by Dr. Mark Rey Santos,
VP for RPIA. The VP mentioned the
need for at least one published research
in a refereed journal for students under
Master’s Programs and published
research in an internationally/nationally-
indexed journal for students under
Doctorate Programs under the
Commission on Higher Education
Memorandum Order 15 series of 2019 –
which provided the reason for the featured
topic during the seminar.
A Round Table Discussion
involving five graduate school student
participants was facilitated afterwards by
Dr. Santos and Ms. Mariefe Cruz, LCUP
Research Officer and Program Host.
Participants were able to share their
experiences in research and publishing a
paper, as well as tips and pieces of advice
for students who wish to present and
publish their papers.
